Green electricity for industry
Electricity from the ten-megawatt Gesmold solar park is supplied via a direct line to the production plant of packaging specialist SPIES Packaging. With this project, SPIES is sending a strong signal in favor of climate-friendly energy supply in the industrial sector. Between 70 and 80 percent of the electricity produced is used directly by the packaging manufacturer for production. Any surplus electricity is fed into the public grid and can be used as green electricity for the region.

Species protection and diversity
The solar park not only enables SPIES Packaging to significantly reduce its ecological footprint, but also actively contributes to species conservation. Once operational, the solar park area will be transformed into extensive grassland using local seeds, providing an ideal environment for flora and fauna to thrive. Flower strips on the site and wild hedges around the perimeter will provide additional habitat. A so-called “Blänke” is to be created for the lapwing breeding pairs spotted on the site. This is a large depression in the terrain that is temporarily filled with water, especially in spring, and serves as a feeding habitat for the lapwings. In addition, a meadow orchard covering an area of around one hectare will be created as a compensatory measure.
