Green electricity from the largest JUWI solar park in Rhineland-Palatinate

Stadtwerke Heidenheim is taking on a JUWI project characterised by complex planning permissions, specific nature conservation requirements and challenging conditions.

The project

With the Lohnweiler solar farm, Stadtwerke Heidenheim AG is expanding its commitment to renewable energy with a further ground-mounted photovoltaic project. The plant was developed by JUWI from 2019 onwards and was commissioned in 2025/26 in the district of Kusel in Rhineland-Palatinate. Following its commissioning at the end of May 2026, Stadtwerke AG took over the operation of the solar park. JUWI remains responsible for technical operations and ensures the reliable running of the plant. The solar park makes an important contribution to sustainable energy supply and the energy transition in the region.

Energy for the region from 32,500 solar panels

With a total capacity of around 20 megawatts, the Lohnweiler solar park will in future generate around 23.5 million kilowatt-hours of environmentally friendly electricity per year – enough to supply around 7,800 households. The plant covers an area of around 25 hectares in the district of Kusel in Rhineland-Palatinate. A total of 32,500 modules there convert solar energy into green electricity, making an important contribution to the regional energy transition.

With the acquisition of the Lohnweiler solar farm, we are continuing to pursue our consistent strategy towards a sustainable and independent energy supply. The solar farm not only strengthens our green in-house generation portfolio, but also makes a tangible contribution to the regional and national energy transition. Our successful collaboration with the JUWI Group demonstrates once again how important strong partnerships are for the expansion of renewable energy.

Special circumstances arising during the course of the project

The Lohnweiler solar park has several distinctive features that have significantly shaped its development and implementation. The planning process spanned several years and required an exceptionally high level of coordination due to complex approval procedures, a large-scale land-use planning process and close consultation with various authorities.

The site itself was particularly sensitive due to nature conservation requirements: A large-scale and time-critical deterrence programme for ground-nesting birds had to be implemented to enable construction to begin. Furthermore, an unusually wet winter and challenging ground conditions made the construction work more difficult. Despite these demanding conditions, the project was successfully completed and now marks a significant milestone as the largest JUWI solar park in Rhineland-Palatinate.
