Energy Security through Forest-Based Wind Power

The Junge Donau wind farm combines renewable energy with sustainable forestry. Forest owners benefit from long-term lease income that provides financial security for forest conversion.

The project

The Junge Donau wind farm is located in the district of Tuttlingen, on the border between Immendingen and Tuttlingen, in a forested area. It was commissioned in 2023 and includes five Vestas V150 wind turbines, each with a capacity of 4.2 MW. The wind farm is operated by the municipal utility association KommunalPartner, which comprises six municipal utilities in Baden-Württemberg. The project was developed and implemented by JUWI.

The newly installed nesting boxes provide the hazel dormouse with a protected habitat and a safe place to retreat.

Wind energy and forestry

Wind energy offers a stable source of income, especially for forestry operations facing the impacts of climate change and economic challenges. Forest owners can expect lease revenues of several tens of thousands of euros per turbine per year—over a period of at least two decades. Wind energy projects in forested areas are always accompanied by extensive compensatory measures to ensure the protection of nature and water resources. At the Junge Donau site, for example, 7.8 hectares of spruce stands were thinned and supplemented with flowering and berry-bearing shrubs to create habitats for the hazel dormouse. To protect bat populations, a 4.9-hectare area was taken out of cultivation.

As a general rule, all our projects are planned and constructed with as little impact as possible. This means that, wherever possible, we use previously damaged areas or ecologically less valuable forest areas, as well as existing road infrastructure. Our experts always keep this in mind.
