O&M Technician/Engineer


The purpose of this role is to provide technical support to the Operation and Maintenance (O&M) team in South Africa, as well as managing and processing technical documentation, datasets and reports and liaising with internal and external stakeholders to timely resolve technical issues.
Primary Responsibilities
  • Perform Maintenance planning and scheduling by:
    • Creating new FOP’s (facility operating plan) for newly acquired plants
    • Assisting with the updating of current FOP’s
    • Collecting and processing of maintenance checklists & work orders from sites
    • Tracking compliance to the FOP to ensure maintenance done in accordance with the schedule
    • Measuring progress of work against schedule, creating maintenance statistics and report monthly deviations to the FOP
    • Assisting with preparing of investigation /productivity reports referring to statistical data and qualitative information related to service
    • Performing analysis using information from the CMMS system to reduce reactive maintenance
    • Providing advice and direction by having continuous contact with site staff regarding equipment quantities and stock replenishment.
  • Perform technical investigations on equipment and instrument failure and provide reports with recommendations, by:
    • Investigating serious plant equipment failures (transformers, inverters, trackers) and report on it
    • Performing root cause analysis when required by Plants
    • Investigating failure modes and performing effects analysis
    • Conducting site inspections/meetings regarding possible deviations from SOP’s/SWP’s
    • Assisting with technical due diligence or handover inspections on potential or newly acquired projects
  • Perform data analysis and reporting on the following:
    • Substation maintenance reports
    • Thermal drone scans
    • Analyse and improve our maintenance procedures and FOP.
    • Tool and equipment requirements for site, based on work requirements or contractual obligations.
  • Conduct business case investigations
    • Conduct research into work efficiency, equipment optimising and financial saving initiatives and projects
    • Investigating business improvement by introducing lean principles
  • Liaise with suppliers and subcontractors on technical & logistic issues
    • Maintain effective communication with stakeholders
  • Technical documentation Management by:
    • Compiling new standards, procedures and specifications to a high degree of quality
    • Updating of standards, procedures and specifications, drawings, manuals, feedback form the sites and ensuring the latest updates are filed on the server.
  • Managing the tools and equipment purchase/calibration by:
    • Managing the logistics, packaging and transport to different sites
    • Research and advise on appropriate tools and equipment required.
    • Advise the purchasing division with appropriate technical information
    • Advising purchasing as to which companies to buy form
    • Arranging calibration with suppliers
    • Assigning asset numbers
    • Keeping registers up to date on with calibration dates
    • Record keeping and storing of calibration certificates 
  • Provide general technical support of O&M department, according to needs by:
    • Performing Infra-Red scans at substations and providing high quality reports
    • Preforming training to site employees on technical matters around Thermal imaging
    • Investigating faults and inaccuracies on DGA equipment and liaising with the OEM to find corrective measures
    • Working independently attending to numerous site meetings with contractors for work to be done, recording discussions and preparing and circulating minutes to personnel, outlining agreed steps and actions
  • Occasional travelling to sites, to support local O&M activities

Your Profile

  • Electrical Engineering (or equivalent) degree or Electrical Technician (Electrical H/C Diploma/Degree )
  • Experience in electrical works will be highly beneficial
  • Experience in supporting maintenance works in an industrial environment will be highly beneficial
  • Experience in PV plants will be beneficial
  • Willingness to learn and interest in renewable energy
  • Good IT skills
  • Responsible and reliable character
  • Team player
  • Willing to be on reach at all times
  • Based in Cape Town, available to travel within SA
  • Experience of working within a project, engineering or construction environment
  • Exposure to project management tools and methodologies
  • Exposure to contracts
  • Fluent in English and Afrikaans
  • Occasional travel may be required in line with business requirements
  • In addition to the duties mentioned above, the job holder is required to carry out other duties that are in essence part of his area of activity, according to his/ her knowledge and abilities.
